5 Ways to Use Nailhead Doodads and So Much More

By

Please accept my apologies for the “missed” Design Wednesday Wisdom. Technical difficulties just jumped in the way. So here is “Catch Up Thursday”!

I recently attended a textile fair and found lots of fabulous new fabrics that will be showing up in the next few months.  But we stumbled onto something that has amazing possibilities far beyond simple nailhead trim for an upholstered chair.

Heico Fasteners could be equated to a “candy store” for a creative designer’s mind.  Their exhibit had thousands and thousands of nailheads and adaptors with several ways to expand the use of the “sometimes” ordinary nailhead.

Five ways to use nailhead and doodads:

  1. Tufting buttons for headboard and cornices
  2. Embellishment for lamp shades
  3. Drawer pulls by adding an adaptor
  4. Napkin rings by adding an adaptor
  5. Add a few metal doodads to sandals and handbags

Here are a few pictures from their exhibit:

Colors and all shapes and sizes!

Imagine the possibilities of adding nailheads to a lamp shade!

Large and small, all shapes and sizes with screw backs to be adapted as drawer pulls.

This is just a peek at the many uses of these fasteners, etc.  When I get some parts and pieces I will show you how this all goes together.

Happy creativity!!!

    Hi Desiree:
I have not tried it but when I saw it at a market the nails were cut off on back with wire snips and lightly glue with clear glue.
    Thanks for the inquiry.

How do you bend the nails down on the inside of the lampshade so they will stay in place?

  3. I’m the interactive media coordinator at Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago, and we’re interested in using a photo from your site on our AmazingGoodwill.com website, to highlight one of our summer decor trends; nailhead details – the photo on this blog with nailhead details on teh lampshade would be perfect! We will be providing proper credit and linking directly back to your website. Please feel free to contact me if this is at all an issue and we will gladly remove the content.

    Hi Eliz:
The nailhead trim shown is from a wholesale source. Check with a local upholsterer for this kind of trim. I can order some simple nailhead trim if you would like more information please contact me.
    Thanks!
