The Perfect Bookcase ArrangementBy Mary
We recently completed a wonderful renovation of a Lake Gaston home. It began with a kitchen update. The project then expanded to include most of the first floor. All the contents of this floor were stored while the pine floors were refinished. Moving back-in required a lot of organization so we tackled the large expanse of bookcases first. Here is the ‘’before’’ picture which we used as a reference to source out additional accessories and to incorporate with the owner’s objects.
First, we updated the pine cabinetry by lightening the back of the bookcases with a natural color grasscloth wallcovering. I love the added texture and interest of grasscloth.
We began with the placement of the owner’s books. We added appeal by placing the books vertically and horizontally and staggering the heights. Books placed horizontally can also act as risers to vary the height in a collection of items. Interesting bookends completed the look.
Mixing metals, patterns, textures and colors are a must! We kept the displays meaningful by including several of the owners’ black and white photographs, family photos, career memorabilia and awards. One of my favorite items in the owners’ collection was the vintage children’s books of the States.
Last but not least is lighting the bookcases. If your bookcases do not have built-in lighting, the addition of some type of lighting is a “must”. Include small bookshelf lamps where a power source in available. Remote control battery operated candles make it easy to place candlesticks throughout the shelves.
Here it is-the “after” bookcases! Layering various elements, staggering heights, and keeping items in odd number groups creates a pleasing array.
So stand back, a take a look at your bookcases. Shake it up a bit by using the above tips to create you own perfect bookcase arrangement.
